Calculation:

Let the two numbers = a & b

a + b = 20 (1)

a - b = 2.5 (2)

By (1) ÷ (2)

(a + b) / (a - b) = 20/2.5 = 8/1

By componendo and dividendo:-

(a + b) + (a - b)/ (a + b) - (a - b) = 8 + 1/ 8 - 1

⇒ 2a/2b = 9/7

⇒ a/b = 9/7

∴ The required ratio = 9 : 7
