Time for today's Latin lesson! The word multimedia comes from two Latin roots, multi and media: multi-, meaning several or many, and media-, meaning in the middle. This multimedia definition tells us that materials on the internet, or in your business presentations, involve several forms of communication to connect (that is, to be in the middle of) the sender and receiver. As any multimedia developer knows, a multimedia system consists of at least two, and perhaps all, of the following types of communication.

Text takes us back to how the internet started, as a means of sending written messages back and forth between researchers. Actually, it takes us back quite a bit further, as pretty much every office memo ever written has mostly consisted of text with perhaps a smidgen of other media types thrown in. Text is still a primary way to transmit information, although nowadays, it is also used to augment other forms of communication, such as a text description of a photograph.

Illustrations are perhaps the oldest form of media, harking back at least as far as the prehistoric paintings on cave walls found in various locations around the world. Gutenberg's printing press in the 1400's enabled mass distribution of multimedia works containing both text and images. The growth of electronic communications has meant that older text-only forms of communication could be enhanced with photographs and images as well. Small images such as thumbnails or icons are often used as a visual "entry point" to larger images or more detailed information.

Text and images sometimes combine in a single form, as many software programs make it easy to create text art, a form of lettering that combines a strong visual element as well.

Your website or presentation can add sound, from a musical background to a spoken explanation, by including audio files. Even digital cameras, a quintessentially image-based technology, have been engineered these days to record sound as well. Many sound files are compressed, which reduces the file size without greatly sacrificing sound quality. Compressed files require less storage space and stream faster when sent over the internet or transmitted to local systems.

Video presents moving pictures and typically combines images and sound for a compelling multimedia experience. Of course, videos can include text as well, which often appears as captioning for spoken words or as text in an image, as in the case of a slide presentation. Video files are some of the most memory-intensive multimedia applications, but clever streaming methods makes their use practical in everyday use.

Animated files occupy a middle ground between still images and video. GIFs, which is an abbreviation for graphic image files, in particular, are small files that present a single image or rapidly display a sequence of a few images to give the appearance of motion.

The word 'Multimedia' is a combination of two words, 'Multi' and 'Media'. Multi means many and media means material through which something can be transmit or send. They combined all the media elements like text and graphics to make the information more effective and attractive.

It refers to content that uses more than one medium. The categories of media are slippery, but they generally include.

This became an important concept as the Web move away from a largely textual layout to a graphical one. Many sites were competing to become true multimedia sites with a mixture of text, sound, images and videos.

RICH MEDIA

This involves more cost on the producer's part, but makes it easier for users to have a seamless, interactive experience.

As the use of rich media increases, so do the benefits and complications. More and more companies are making use of rich media as marketing tools and training programs. Animations and audio files may play differently from one media player to another. A successful rich media presentation will be interesting, informative, and easily access by any user.

HYPERMEDIA

Hypermedia, use in online multimedia presentations such as rich media, refers to the hyperlinks embed in visual media. It is ideal as a tool for allocating information on appropriate levels, giving users knowledge in pertinent pieces.

These types of nonlinear interaction are becoming increasingly common in the business world.

Buttons should visually and audibly click; visitors should be greet with music. dazzling images should appear and disappear on the screen.

Unfortunately, the web is not as dynamic as television or a CD-ROM-at least not yet. Eventually, it will get there, but introducing multimedia poses real challenges and trade-offs. For those with limit budgets-or those trying to keep their sites accessible to the general population-important choices must be made.

Currently, there are four major ways of adding animation to a web page: server push, Shockwave, Java and GIF animation.

Browsers: Window to the Web

But originally, the most popular browser software was call Mosaic. By mid-1995, Netscape's web browser, Navigator, grab an estimate 75% of the browser market.

Before Netscape, web pages always came in gray, and center text was nearly-impossible. By mid-1995, the web move rapidly to adopt the special Netscape HTML "tags," as they are call.

However, without a plug-in, there is no way to see the movie.

One last significant point about Netscape was the introduction of Microsoft's Internet Explorer. Native vs. Plug-Ins

I believe in supporting native features over plug-in features-not exclusively, but certainly in budget decisions where choices must be made. Anyone using a browser can see native multimedia without problems. On the other hand, to see a plug-in multimedia feature, a browser user must have the appropriate plug-in software. This can involve downloading 1-to-2 megabyte files-a process that can take 15 minutes or longer for a modem user. After that, the plug-in must be install.

Shockwave: Macromedia Director is a leading multimedia production program.

There are two drawbacks to Shockwave. One, file sizes can get big, leading to long download times for modem users. This problem is rectifies by simply using Shockwave wisely. The second, more serious, problem is that Shockwave is not "native" to Netscape 2.0. This means that those able to view Shockwave animations will always be less than the total percentage of Netscape users.

Java: A programming language develop by Sun, a leading producer of computer workstations and network equipment. Using Java, animations, interactive games and much more can appear within a web page. Unlike Shockwave, Java is completely programmable and has been license to many major browser companies-ensuring widespread support. Java's downside is that it can look slightly less polish than Shockwave. Java's big plus is that it is native to Netscape 2.0. That means everyone using Netscape can see Java applications without having to download a plug-in.

In a GIF animation, an ordinary image loads, then changes to an alternate image or images. This rapid display of image produces animation. GIF images are native to Netscape 2.0, making them an ideal way to deliver simple animations.
