Overview

The Peugeot 3008 is a mid-size SUV that is easy on the eye, and packs a punch in engine choices and state-of-the-art technology. The 3008 faces stiff competition in the popular mid-size SUV market, up against the likes of the Toyota RAV4 and Nissan X Trail, but holds its own. The 3008 has won several major international awards, including the 2017 European Car of The Year title. 

The 5008 continues on from the good work of the 3008. However, this model has more room for storage and for passengers, with seven seats instead of the five. The Peugeot 5008 has a versatile interior, with a brilliant choice of engines and a conventional automatic drive which add up to it being a top-class player in the seven seat SUV category against such models as the Skoda Kodiaq and Hyundai Santa Fe.

Trims

There is a big difference when we look at and compare Peugeot 3008 and 5008 lineups and price. In terms of range, the Peugeot 3008 is available in three trim levels (Allure, GT, and GT Sport) with three engine options in total.

In stark contrast there is only one trim available in the Peugeot 5008 and that is the 5008 GT. That’s right, no more Allure or GT Line. The only choice you get to make is whether to buy the petrol or diesel version of the 5008 GT. 

Exterior

The Peugeot 3008 is a great looking model with a larger front with recessed headlights, and is surrounded by a huge front grille. The beltline travels along the rear of the car, where it meets the three-stripe “claw effect” rear lights. The 18-inch alloy wheel is the size for the lower two trims (Allure and GT). The 3008 GT Sport comes fitted with a special and striking Black Pack design that also features larger 19-inch size alloys.

The Peugeot 5008 is 194mm longer and 22mm higher than its five-seat 3008 counterpart, but much smaller than other seven seaters. However, this is not a bad thing when it comes to its aesthetics. The 5008 is a compact and dynamic vehicle, with a revised front end with frameless grille and shiny alloys that add to a strong road presence.

Interior

Inside the 3008, a futuristic dash set-up is headlined by the “i-Cockpit,” which features a customisable digital instrument panel accompanied by a second 10-inch infotainment touch screen in the dash’s centre. The unique smaller-than-usual leather steering wheel does feature an adjustable steering column should you wish to move it to a more comfortable position.

Similarly, the cabin design of the Peugeot 5008 has a futuristic feel. It has a textured, layered dash design to make the front passengers feel like they’re sitting in a cockpit, with key-style controls dynamically included within the dash that control the air-con and the headlights. As with the case of many seven seat SUVs, the rear seats in the third and final row may be a little too snug for anyone but small children over longer journeys.

Engine

Now let’s dive into the engine detail of each model.

The Peugeot 3008 has three engines in its lineup. There is a 121kW/240Nm 1.6L turbo petrol unit available in the Allure and GT, with the option of a 130kW/400Nm 2.0L turbo diesel engine that’s exclusive to the GT trim. Finally, the top specified GT Sport is powered by a 133kW/250Nm 1.6L turbo petrol engine.

The 5008 GT Petrol version houses a 121kW/240Nm 1.6L turbo petrol engine, while the 5008 GT Diesel runs on a130kW/400Nm 2.0L turbo diesel engine.

Both the 3008 and 5008 are front wheel drive, with a fuel tank capacity of 53L and 56L respectively. The diesel powered variants in models offer the best fuel economy of 5.0 L/100km.

Safety

Both the 3008 and 5008 have been awarded a maximum 5 star ANCAP rating, so you can be sure to feel safe on the road. This means they have all the basic standards we have all come to expect, such as passenger and driver airbag arrangement, seat belt warning and door ajar warning.

These features are complemented by the latest in safety and driver assist systems including emergency brake assist, active blind spot detection, adaptive cruise control and full vision reversing and front cameras as well as front and rear parking sensors. Technology

The Peugeot 3008 and 5008 are also both packed with the latest technology. The 10-inch touch screen on the centre of the dash in both models is equipped for Apple CarPlay as well as Android Auto, navigation, mobile phone induction and automatic climate control. And features like keyless entry make things so much more convenient.

Boot Space

We’ve established the Peugeot 5008 is larger in overall dimensions than the 3008 (it is a seven seat SUV after all). But how does it translate to boot capacity?

Well the 3008 basically has two settings – one with the rear seats upright (591L) and the other with the rear seats folded down flat (1670L).

You get more configurations in terms of boot space in the 5008 because it has 2 rear rows, so the third row seats can be folded down or removed altogether. For simplification we shall consider the two most similar scenarios to the 3008. Firstly we have the boot capacity with the second row seats up and third row seats folded down (952L) and then with both the second and third row seats folded down (2042L). So if you have a big family or like to take lots of gear on trips, the 5008 may be the ideal model for you. 

Verdict

You can’t go wrong with either the 3008 or 5008. Both are safe, reliable and well designed inside and out. In the end it comes down to what suits your own lifestyle and personal preference. If you like choice, then the 3008 range has more to pick from in terms of trims and personalisation. If more space is a priority for you, then the Peugeot 5008 wins hands down.

Peugeot's local arm is pitching the 5008 at an interesting point. While nowhere near the largest of seven-seaters, it is also not the cheapest, that honour going to Peugeot's former technical partner for SUVs, Mitsubishi. 

There is now just one specification level (although it isn't really), the GT and you can have it in petrol form for (deep breath) $51,990, or diesel form (keep drawing that long breath) $59,990. That's a lot of cash.

But as I say, the spec is not the same between the two. And there is a lot of stuff.

The petrol GT opens with 18-inch wheels, a 12.3-inch digital dashboard (upgraded, apparently), a new 10.0-inch touchscreen (ditto), front and rear parking sensors, around-view cameras, leather and Alcantara seats, keyless entry and start, auto parking, adaptive cruise control, powered tailgate, rear window blinds, auto LED headlights, auto wipers and a space-saver spare.

The more expensive diesel picks up the diesel engine (obviously), a banging Focal-branded 10-speaker stereo, acoustic laminated front side windows and 19-inch alloys. 

The diesel GT's front seats are also upgraded, with extra adjustability, a massage function, heating, memory function and electrical operation of just about everything on them.

Both versions have the new 10.0-inch multimedia touchscreen. The older screen was slow and really needed a good stab to work, which is a bit of a problem when so many functions are packed into the system. 

The new one is better, but still a touch laggy. Weirdly, the climate control shortcuts permanently frame the screen, so the extra real estate goes on those controls.

The diesel GT's seats are available as an option on the petrol as part of a $3590 option pack. The pack also adds the Nappa leather, which itself is a separate option for $2590 on that upper-spec model. Neither pack is cheap (but the Nappa leather is lovely) and the massage seats are more than a novelty.

Other option costs are $1990 for a sunroof and $2590 for Nappa leather (diesel only).

Just one paint colour, 'Sunset Copper', is free. The rest are extra. For $690 you can choose 'Celebes Blue', 'Nera Black', 'Artense Grey', or 'Platinum Grey.' 'Ultimate Red' and 'Pearl White' cost $1050.
