Wo bist du, João Gilberto?

Georges GachotFrance, Switzerland, Germany | 2018 | 106 minWorld premiereLanguages : Portuguese, German

Subtitles : English, French

Ho Ba Là Là, Looking for João Gilberto is the title of a book in which the German journalist Marc Fischer recounts his desperate quest to find his idol, João Gilberto, gone from the public scene for decades. Following the traces left by Fischer, the director Georges Gachot goes to Rio de Janeiro too so as to continue the search for the legendary Gilberto, of whom he is also a fan. In the streets of the city, the music of the father of bossa nova still resonates, as if he were present everywhere.
Like a film noir, the director embodies a kind of detective looking for a missing person. Gachot borrows from the fanciful mystery that surrounds the figure of the Brazilian to articulate a narrative between fiction and documentary, a fine pretext to write a new history of bossa nova and its heritage along the way. We will ever know where João Gilberto is? No matter what, we can be certain that his music will always be there. The ultra-famous rhythm of Ho ba là là continues to ring out like a lullaby for all the insomniacs who are still looking for traces of him on the streets of Rio de Janeiro.

WHERE ARE YOU, JOÃO GILBERTO?
A film by Georges Gachot
(Wo bist Du, João Gilberto?, Switzerland/France/Germany 2018, 106 minutes. In German, Portuguese, English and French with English subtitles)

Swiss-born director Georges Gachot has made some of the most beautiful films on Brazilian music, including Rio Sonata on Nana Caymmi, Music Is Perfume on Maria Bethania, and O Samba on Martinho da Vila. In his latest film, Where Are You, João Gilberto?, acclaimed at over thirty international film festivals including Locarno and Vision du Reel, Gachot follows the footsteps of German writer Marc Fischer's obsessive search for the founding father of bossa nova, Brazilian musician João Gilberto. Fischer detailed his journey in a book, Hobalala, but committed suicide one week before its publication. Taking up the search, Gachot transcends Fisher’s obsession, managing to be delicate and respectful to both protagonists, while with access to Gilberto’s family and friends—including his second wife, singer Miúcha, and fellow bossa nova composers Marcos Valle and Roberto Menescal—he offers a portrait of this enigmatic figure.

Wanna-be Werner Herzog copy cat?

Too many things in this film are so weird, fake, invented and/or straight wrong it's hard to know where to begin. In the official description of the 'docu' we read i.e. 'João Gilberto, who has not been seen in public for decades.....'- lol. A quick search on Youtube gives us a full solo concert of his in Tokyo from 2006! And that was not his last one! The 'auteur' of this documentary tries mostly to make himself beings even as important and searching for the mysterious Joao Gilberto. It's true that Joao became reclusive in his final years (not decades), his health deteriorated massively. It is well known where he lived during that time (not in Ipanema) and that the book author nor the director producer of this weirdo doc were not able to find events place is a sad reminder of the level where this production stands. Forgettable and not worth the time watching.
